Exam-day procedure
The theory exam takes place at your canton's road traffic office. Bring a valid ID and your learner's permit (if already issued). The exam is computer-based—no paper forms.
Exam structure
The figures below apply to Cat. B (car) and Cat. A / A1 (motorcycle). For the moped exam (Cat. M) the format is different: 30 questions, 90 points maximum, and a pass mark of 81 points (max. 9 penalty points).
- 50 questions with 3 answer options each (Cat. B / A / A1)
- Time limit: approx. 45 minutes
- Maximum: 150 points
- Pass mark: 135 points (90 %)
- Maximum 15 penalty points
- Languages: officially in German, French and Italian; some cantons also offer English (check locally)

- Road signs – regulatory, warning, information signs

Results and retakes
You receive your result immediately after the exam. If you fail, you can retake the exam as soon as the next available appointment is open at your canton's road traffic office. There is no official mandatory waiting period, and there is no limit on attempts.
Costs
The exam fee varies by canton and is typically between CHF 30 and CHF 50.
