Swiss theory exam – summary & procedure

Exam-day procedure

The theory exam takes place at your canton's road traffic office. Bring a valid ID and your learner's permit (if already issued). The exam is computer-based—no paper forms.

Exam structure

• 50 questions with 3 answer options each
• Time limit: approx. 45 minutes
• Maximum: 150 points
• Pass mark: 135 points (90 %)
• Maximum 15 penalty points

• Traffic rules – priority, speed, overtaking, distance
• Road signs – regulatory, warning, information signs
• Vehicle technology – lighting, brakes, tyres
• Safety – seat belts, child seats, first aid
• Environment – fuel consumption, eco-driving
• Situational questions – images and real-traffic scenarios

Results and retakes

You receive your result immediately after the exam. If you fail, you can retake after a waiting period (varies by canton, usually 1–4 weeks). There is no limit on attempts.

Costs

The exam fee varies by canton and is typically between CHF 30 and CHF 50.
