How many questions does the Swiss theory exam have?

Exam format category B (car)

The Swiss car theory exam (cat. B) consists of 50 questions with 3 answer options each. Only one is correct. Each question earns 3 points—150 points maximum. You need at least 135 points (90 %) to pass, meaning a maximum of 15 penalty points (5 wrong answers).

Exam format category M (moped)

The moped exam (cat. M) has 30 questions with a maximum of 90 points. You may have at most 9 penalty points.

How large is the question pool?

Switzerland uses a large, regularly updated question pool. Theorie Swiss includes over 3,000 practice questions. Each exam draws a different mix from various topics.

Topics covered

  • Traffic rules – priority, speed, overtaking, distance
  • Road signs – regulatory, warning and information signs
  • Vehicle knowledge – lighting, tyres, brakes, safety
  • Situational questions – traffic scenarios with images

Time limit

You have about 45 minutes for 50 questions (cat. B)—roughly 54 seconds per question. The moped exam takes about 30 minutes for 30 questions.
