When should you start studying for the theory exam?
Theorie SwissMarch 16, 2026

The ideal timeframe
Most learners need 4 to 8 weeks of regular practice to become exam-ready. Starting 6–8 weeks before your planned exam date gives you enough time to cover all topics and complete plenty of mock exams.
Consistency beats cramming
30–60 minutes daily is more effective than long study sessions at the weekend. Short, regular sessions help your brain retain traffic rules and signs long-term—a principle known as spaced repetition.
A simple study plan
- Weeks 1–2: Foundations – traffic rules, priority, speed limits
- Weeks 3–4: Deepening – road signs, lighting, parking
- Weeks 5–6: Mock exams – full practice exams, analyse weak areas
- Weeks 7–8: Final revision – focus only on weak areas, final simulations under real conditions
When to register for the exam
Register when you consistently score 95 % or above on mock exams. While you only need 135 out of 150 points (90 %) to pass the official Swiss exam, aiming higher during practice ensures you pass comfortably on exam day.
Common mistakes when starting to study
- Starting too late – last-minute studying leads to stress and a higher failure rate
- Just clicking through questions – without reading explanations, knowledge gaps remain
- Skipping mock exams – the best way to simulate the real exam is with real simulations
