Stopping and parking rules

Rules for stopping and parking in Switzerland.

Stopping vs parking

Stopping is a brief halt (e.g. to drop off a passenger). Parking is leaving the vehicle unattended.

Different rules apply. Yellow lines restrict stopping; red lines restrict both stopping and parking.

Where you cannot park

Do not park on pedestrian crossings, bus stops, cycle lanes or where signs prohibit it.

Keep at least 5 metres from intersections and 3 metres from fire hydrants.

Parking on slopes

When parking on a slope, turn the wheels so the vehicle would roll away from traffic if the brake failed.

Use the handbrake and, in manual cars, leave the car in gear.
