Traffic rules overview

Essential traffic rules for the Swiss theory exam.

General principles

Traffic rules exist to keep everyone safe. Priority, speed limits and right-of-way are fundamental.

Always drive defensively: anticipate the actions of other road users.

Speed limits

Urban roads: 20–50 km/h depending on the zone. Motorways: 120 km/h. Secondary roads: 90 km/h.

Speed limits can be lower in bad weather or near schools.

Right-of-way

Vehicles on a main road have priority over those joining from side roads.

At unmarked intersections, give way to vehicles approaching from the right.
