A1 licence Switzerland – your entry to motorcycle theory

Cat. A1: age and what you may ride
Category A1 has an important age split in Switzerland – not “everything from 15 with 125 cc”. Per our motorcycle money page:
- From age 15: motorcycles up to 50 cc / 4 kW
- From age 16: motorcycles up to 125 cc / 11 kW
A1 is the classic entry to a motorcycle licence: lighter machines first, then – with age and experience – the path towards cat. A. Further stages are covered on Motorcycle theory course. For theory, you prepare for the same base theory whether you start at 15 or 16.

A1 theory exam: same format as the car test
The base theory for motorcycles (cat. A / A1) is identical to the car theory (cat. B). You train the same rules, signs and scenarios – plus two-wheeler topics such as protective gear, cornering and braking distances.

On exam day you sit at a computer at the road traffic office. It is not about memorising plates or VIN numbers – it is priority, signs, distance, overtaking and realistic traffic images. Pattern recognition keeps you calm across 50 questions.
Already hold cat. B? Theory (and VKU) often skipped
Our motorcycle page states: if you already hold a category B car licence, you typically do not need the base theory exam on the motorcycle path – and on that path no VKU is required either. Handy if you move from car to bike.
Still: register the change correctly and confirm the exact flow in your canton. Learner permit, basic course and practical exam remain relevant – only base theory (and VKU per the site claim) drop out on the B path.
After theory: learner permit & basic course (light overview)
- Learner permit (Lernfahrausweis): often valid about 4 months (per motorcycle page overview)
- Mandatory motorcycle basic course (Grundkurs / PGS): 12 lessons, usually within the first 4 months
Without the basic course you cannot move on to the manoeuvre test later. Book the 12 lessons early. Before theory itself you usually need a first-aid course, an eye test and the application at the office – the money page walks through the sequence.
What to practise for A1
- Priority & junctions – right of way, signals, roundabouts

- Distance, overtaking, vision – critical on two wheels
- Motorcycle-specific – gear, cornering, braking, wet roads
- Situational questions – traffic images, not only definitions
Aim for stable safety under time pressure. Short regular sessions beat last-night cramming.

Common doubts before the A1 exam
- “Is A1 theory easier than car?” – No: same base-theory format.
- “125 cc from age 15?” – No per the money-page split: 125 cc / 11 kW from 16; from 15 the lower limit (50 cc / 4 kW) applies.
- “Do I need theory with a car licence?” – Per the motorcycle site claim: no (and no VKU on that path). Confirm with your canton.
- “Is memorising enough?” – Rarely. Situational questions reward understanding.
