Theory exam study plan: when to start, 6 weeks and exam day
When to start the Swiss theory exam, how a 6-week study plan looks and what you need on exam day – including the 2026/2027 format.

Short answer — when should you start studying?
Most learners need 4 to 8 weeks of regular practice before mock exams feel calm. Starting 6 to 8 weeks before your planned date leaves room for every topic, for mistakes and for timed simulations. Less time can work: with 60 to 90 minutes a day you can often reach a solid level in 3 to 4 weeks – if you fix weak spots instead of only clicking through questions.
Settle two things first: when will you sit the exam – still in 2026 or only in 2027? And how many minutes a day can you actually keep? The format changes on 1 January 2027. The cut is explained in Theory test 2027. The classic rules stay: priority, speed, signs. Overview: Swiss traffic rules.
This guide combines when to start, a week-by-week plan and exam-day prep. No advertising claims – a practical theory exam study plan you can fit to your date.
Exam format 2026/2027 in brief
Plan the format that applies on your exam day – not a number you saw in an old forum.
| Feature | Until 31 Dec 2026 (B / A / A1) | From 1 Jan 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 50 | 55 (basic theory) |
| Points | 150 (3 per question) | asa has not yet published the table on its exam-format page |
| Pass mark | 135 points / max. 15 penalty points | not yet published by asa |
| Time | about 45 minutes | not yet published by asa |
The moped exam (cat. M) stays at 30 questions in the sources cited. No 55-question switch for mopeds is stated there. More figures: How many questions does the Swiss theory exam have?.
On exam day you sit at a computer at your canton’s road traffic office. Bring a valid ID and your learner permit if you already have one. The result is immediate. If you fail, you can retake – appointment and any waiting time are cantonal. There is no national mandatory wait and no official cap on attempts. Details: Failed theory test Switzerland.
The exam fee is set by the canton. Ask your office for the current amount. This article is not official advice.
Consistency beats cramming
30 to 60 minutes daily beats long weekend marathons. Short sessions help you keep rules and traffic images – especially situational questions. That does not mean “a new theory every day”. It means: repeat, read explanations, recognise the same traps again.
Three start mistakes that break the plan:
- Starting too late – studying turns into stress, you postpone or walk into the office unsteadily.
- Only clicking answers – without the explanation, gaps stay. In the real exam the same rule often appears as a different picture.
- Skipping full mocks – the exam is one timed block, not a casual topic quiz.
If you sit the exam in 2027, an extra step applies: VKU before theory. Book the course and the waiting time before you set the office date. Details: VKU Switzerland and Theory test 2027.
The 6-week study plan
This plan is for car and motorcycle basic theory. Match the question count to your date: 50 until the end of 2026, 55 from 2027. Moped learners shorten the sets but keep the same rhythm.
Week 1 — Foundations
Read the rules overview on Swiss traffic rules. Practise priority, speed and following distance – the topics that most often sink mocks. Start with practise the theory exam online free: short sets, instant scoring, no account required.
Note topics that feel shaky – not individual answers. Goal of week 1: you know where you are unsure, not “I clicked 200 questions”.
Week 2 — Lock in the rules
Add overtaking, stopping and parking and simple junctions. Stay at 30–45 minutes. Repeat week-1 topics instead of only collecting new ones. A useful check: you can explain to someone else who has priority at an uncontrolled junction – without guessing.
When a picture shows several road users, train an order: signs first, then who is already moving, then priority to the right.
Week 3 — Signs and lights
Road signs, traffic lights and vehicle lighting. Many mistakes come from two similar signs or from the question pointing at a different sign than the one you noticed first. Filter by topic and finish every explanation after a wrong answer.
Connect signs with speed: a 30 km/h zone does not end “at some point” – it ends when it is signed. Zone changes are classic traps.
Week 4 — Vehicle knowledge and the first full mock
Vehicle knowledge (tyres, brakes, lights), safety (seat belt, child seat) and calm, economical driving. Then the first full mock: 50 questions until 31 Dec 2026, 55 from 1 Jan 2027, timer on, no break. Count penalty points.
A weak first mock is normal. It is not a verdict – it is the plan for week 5. Write down which blocks cost the points.
Week 5 — Mocks and weak spots
Three to four full exams in one sitting, with the timer, no phone pause. Analyse honestly: priority? similar signs? speed-zone changes? picture questions? Then practise only those blocks.
Target until 31 Dec 2026: clearly under 15 penalty points, not just beside the line. If you sit in 2027, get used to the longer paper and add FAS, VKU and traffic-sense to the same mocks. Guessed 2027 pass marks do not belong in your plan.
Week 6 — Revision and rest
No new mountains of content. Gaps only. In the last two to three days, two to three more mocks. Then the checklist below – and sleep. Repeating “everything once more” in week 6 confuses busyness with preparation.
If you only have 3–4 weeks
Compress the plan instead of deleting it: weeks 1+2 in seven days, weeks 3+4 in seven days, then mocks immediately. That only works with 60–90 minutes a day and honest error review. Last-minute in seven days with no prior knowledge is a risk – not the plan we recommend.
If you already know the rules (old driving school, a previous attempt), keep week 1 shorter and simulate earlier. What still matters: full timed exams before you book the office.
When to register for the exam
Register when your mocks sit consistently at 90 % or above. Until the end of 2026 that means 135 of 150 points, or at most 15 penalty points. One lucky paper is not enough – use the last three mocks as the measure.
If you sit in 2027, train 55 questions and the new blocks and complete VKU first. A learner permit from 2025 or 2026 does not protect you from the new format. Details: Theory test 2027.
December 2026 slots are often tight. If you already pass the 50-question format comfortably and still want to sit in 2026, do not wait until the last week.
Last-minute checklist (final 2–3 days)
- Target weak spots: priority, similar signs, situational questions. Do not open new chapters.
- Two to three full mocks under exam conditions – timer, no pause, count penalty points.
- Read explanations: understand why the right answer is right, not only which one it is.
- No content mountain the night before. If something is still shaky, repeat that one block – then stop.
The night before
- Sleep at least 7–8 hours.
- No more cramming – your brain needs rest to keep what you learned.
- Lay out clothes, ID, confirmation and the route to the office.
- Plan buffer for delay, parking or the walk from the station.
On exam day
- Arrive early – time pressure at the door costs focus.
- Read every question – the difference is often one word (“always”, “may”, “must”).
- Do not get stuck – mark and return if the system allows; otherwise pick the safest lawful option and move on.
- Scan the whole picture – which sign is meant? Who is already moving? Is there a zone change?
Typical traps: “always” / “never” (there is almost always an exception), images with several signs, speed questions after a zone change. If the last days’ mocks were stable, trust the prep – not the impulse to rewrite everything.
Topics your plan should cover
- Traffic rules – priority, speed, overtaking, distance
- Signs and lights – regulatory, warning, information, signals
- Vehicle and safety – lighting, tyres, brakes, belt, child seat
- Environment – calm, look-ahead driving
- Situational questions – traffic images, not definition lists
- From 2027 onwards – driver assistance, VKU risks, traffic sense (Theory test 2027)
How to practise the exam way
Do not just click. Practise rules the way they appear as pictures. Shortest start: learn the theory exam online free. The rules themselves stay on Swiss traffic rules.
When the format sits and you want every topic plus mocks: full access for CHF 19.95, 60 days, no subscription – car, motorcycle and moped. Free sets first. Decide after that.
FAQ
When should I start studying for the theory exam?
Most calmly 6–8 weeks before the date. 4 weeks often work with daily practice. Under 3 weeks only if you already know the rules and simulate immediately.
How long should I study each day?
30–60 minutes is the standard plan. 60–90 minutes if you only have 3–4 weeks. Long weekend nights do not replace that.
When do I register?
When the last mocks sit consistently at 90 % or above (until 31 Dec 2026: at most 15 penalty points). Not after one good day.
What changes in the 2027 study plan?
55 questions instead of 50, VKU first, new topic blocks. asa has not yet published the 2027 scoring table or duration. Overview: Theory test 2027.
What do I bring on exam day?
Valid ID, confirmation, learner permit if issued. Your canton’s road traffic office confirms the details.
What if I fail?
You see the result immediately and can book again. Waiting time and fee are cantonal. There is no national cap on attempts.
Is memorising enough?
Rarely. Situational questions reward understanding. Clicking without explanations fails on the next variant of the same rule.
Your next step
Set the date, pick the 6-week or the 3–4-week path, and start today with a short set – not “next week when I have time”. Clarify 2026 or 2027 first, then alternate rules and mocks.
Note: Not legal advice and not a substitute for your canton’s information. We will only publish 2027 scoring and duration once asa does.
