Short answer — what happens if you fail the theory test?

Failing the Swiss theory test is frustrating, but it is not the end. You may retake the basic theory. There is no nationwide federal cap on the number of theory attempts (the attempt limits in VZV Art. 23 concern the practical driving test). Waiting time and fees are set by your canton: some traffic offices allow a retake the next day or on the next theory day; others have their own rules. Each attempt is charged again.

  • Pass mark until 31 Dec 2026: 50 questions, 150 points, at most 15 penalty points (135/150) — as published by cantonal offices such as Zurich and St. Gallen (and asa) for basic theory A/A1/B.
  • Waiting time: varies by canton — always check your own Strassenverkehrsamt.
  • Costs: also cantonal (examples below); due again on every retake.

From 2027 the exam format changes. 2027 scoring is not published yet — see Theory test 2027.

Right after a fail

You usually see the result immediately on screen. Your learner permit is not issued until you pass basic theory. The exam fee is still charged (often by invoice, depending on the canton).

Next steps: plan the next slot or theory day, practise the topics that cost you points, and only return when mock tests sit clearly above the pass mark. See the theory learning plan and how many questions the theory test has.

How often can you retake?

For basic theory, the Ordinance on the Admission to Road Traffic (VZV) has no nationwide attempt limit like the practical test. Article 23 VZV governs retakes of the practical driving test — not theory.

In practice you can retake as often as needed — each time paying the current cantonal fee. Cantons still set process rules (booking, open-door sessions, or “one exam of the same category per day”). Ask your traffic office before you plan.

How long is the waiting period?

There is no single federal waiting period for theory. Verified examples:

  • Canton of Zurich: after a fail you must wait at least one day, then you may return without an appointment (Zurich traffic office theory page).
  • Canton of St. Gallen: no waiting period, but only one theory exam of the same category per day; you may come again on the next theory day (sg.ch FAQ).

Other cantons may differ. Claims such as “14 days everywhere” are not nationally verified — trust your office. Locations: theory test locations.

What does a retake cost?

You pay the basic-theory fee again on every attempt. Amounts are cantonal and can change. Public examples (basic theory; always re-check the fee list):

  • Zurich: CHF 36 (basic theory fee schedule)
  • St. Gallen: CHF 30
  • Bern: CHF 30 (SVSA Bern fees)
  • Basel-Landschaft: CHF 46 (basis A/B group)

Check your Strassenverkehrsamt for the current cantonal fee.

Pass mark for attempt two

Until 31 December 2026, basic theory for categories A, A1 and B uses 50 questions, max 150 points, pass with at most 15 penalty points (at least 135 points), about 45 minutes — as listed by Zurich and St. Gallen offices.

For 2027 scoring, see Theory test 2027. After you pass you receive the learner permit and start practical training.

How to prepare for attempt two

  1. Error review: which topics cost points — priority, signs, speed, distance? Drill those first (priority rules, traffic signs).
  2. Understand, don’t only memorise: asa licensees do not get the full current question bank. Unseen questions appear — rules and logic matter.
  3. Stable mocks: book again only when recent simulations stay clearly under 15 penalty points. Use the learning plan.
  4. Know the process: ID, admission letter/card, language choice. More: theory FAQ.
